DescriptionThe hexagonal main hall of Chōhō-ji, widely known as Rokkaku-dō, enshrines Nyoirin Kannon. The hidden principal image is traditionally said to have been Prince Shōtoku’s personal devotional Buddha, and regular worship is offered before an omaedachi image. The temple is also known for the Heso-ishi, the “navel stone” associated with Kyoto’s traditional center, and as the birthplace of ikebana. In the midst of the city, it remains an approachable Kannon sanctuary that has received people’s prayers for centuries.
