DescriptionThe Wooden Seated Shaka Nyorai is the principal image enshrined in the Main Hall of Daichiji Temple. Temple tradition attributes this monumental Joroku-scale statue to Gyoki in the Tempyo period, said to have been carved according to the devotional practice of itto sanrei—bowing three times for each cut of the chisel. The seated figure is about eight shaku, roughly 2.4 meters, in height and is counted among the Three Great Buddhas of Koka. Its serene face and imposing gilded volume give it a powerful yet peaceful presence. Beyond the temple's celebrated garden, the colossal Shaka itself is a compelling reason to visit and can be worshipped during regular viewing hours.
