DescriptionThe principal images in the Main Hall of Jozenji Temple are a Wooden Seated Amida Nyorai flanked by standing Kannon and Seishi Bodhisattvas. All three are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Inscriptions on their pedestals date the ensemble to the mid-13th century, around 1253–1256. Their refined, gentle faces, dynamically folded robes, openwork halo with kalavinka motifs, and richly decorated lacquered nine-tier pedestal are especially notable. A painting of the Twenty-Five Bodhisattvas Descending from the Pure Land fills the wall behind them, creating an unusually concentrated Pure Land devotional setting. The statues can be viewed on weekdays by advance reservation.
