DescriptionThe Wooden Standing Eleven-Faced Thousand-Armed Kannon is the principal image of Takatsuki Kannon Hall (Daienji Temple). Dating from around the Muromachi period, it is designated a cultural property of Nagahama City. The life-size image has forty-two arms and retains an unpainted wood surface, showing features modeled on an older sculptural type. Tradition holds that during a time of warfare it escaped destruction by fire and was found standing on a rock, and it has long been revered as the “Kannon of Fire Protection,” believed to protect the village from fire. Advance reservation is required for viewing.
