DescriptionThe Wooden Standing Kannon Bodhisattva is enshrined in the Kannon Hall at Tojuin Temple. An ink inscription on the back dates its creation to Kenpo 4 (1216), in the early Kamakura period, and it is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The figure stands about 172 cm high and is carved from a single piece of kaya wood. Its calm expression is balanced by a dignified, upright presence. It is worshipped in the hall together with a seated Dainichi Nyorai and other Buddhist images. Advance reservation is required for viewing.
