DescriptionThe Wooden Standing Eleven-Faced Kannon was handed down at Keisokuji Temple and is now housed in the Kokokaku repository. Known as an early Heian-period work, it is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The slender figure is draped in robes carved with flowing lines, and its face combines a keen, dignified expression with a sense of gentleness. The aged patina remaining over the body gives the image both weight and warmth. After the mountain temples declined in the wake of the anti-Buddhist movement of the Meiji period, the statue continued to be protected in the Furuhashi community at the foot of the mountain and is now displayed at Kokokaku.
