Description

The wooden standing image traditionally identified as Thousand-Armed Kannon at Kuroda Kannonji dates from the early Heian period and is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Carved from a single piece of wood, it has 18 arms, and its iconography has led to the view that it may represent Juntei Kannon (Cundi). The figure retains features associated with the Tenpyo tradition and is known for an expression that combines sternness with gentleness. It has long been deeply revered locally for harmony between spouses and healing. Advance reservation is required for viewing.
