Description

The Standing Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Footed Kannon of Shomyoji Temple is enshrined in a hall beside Nishino Yakushido. Temple tradition says a Kannon hall was built around 1004–1012 to house the guardian image of the wife of Asozu Hidemichi, and after several relocations it was moved to its current site in 2017. The present image dates from the Edo period, is about 42 cm high, and was made with the joined-block technique. Its distinctive form includes forty feet, making it an exceptionally rare Thousand-Footed Kannon in Japan, and it is thought to be related to Tendai esoteric Buddhism. It can now be viewed by making a reservation at least two days in advance.
