DescriptionThe Fudo Myoo with Two Attendant Boys is enshrined in the rear sanctuary of the National Treasure Main Hall at Saimyoji Temple. Dating from the late Heian period, the group is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Carved from single pieces of kaya wood without hollowing, the figures are noted for the central Fudo's comparatively restrained wrathful expression and the shallow, flowing treatment of the robes. Kongara and Seitaka attendants flank Fudo Myoo, and the temple presents the group as the oldest surviving example of a seated Fudo triad. It can be viewed during special openings of the rear sanctuary Buddhist statue group.
