DescriptionThe seated Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Kannon Bodhisattva is the principal image enshrined in the Main Hall of Kannonshoji Temple. After the previous Main Hall and principal image were destroyed by fire in 1993, the new image was consecrated in 2004 when the hall was rebuilt. It is carved entirely from sandalwood, using 23 tons of raw sandalwood imported with special permission from the Indian government. Including its halo, it stands about 6.3 meters high, with a seated height of about 3.5 meters. Known as one of Japan’s largest images of Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Kannon, it is the principal image of the 32nd temple of the Saigoku Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage and can be viewed in the Main Hall.
