Description

The wooden seated Eleven-Faced Kannon is the secret principal image of Rakuyaji Temple. Carved from a single piece of wood and about 3.3 meters high, it is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. With broad shoulders and a substantial, commanding form, it is an exceptionally large seated image of Eleven-Faced Kannon and is affectionately known at the temple as “Ichii Kannon.” Temple tradition holds that Saicho carved it from a giant ichii tree after receiving a sacred dream. It is now shown during special viewing periods in spring and autumn.
