DescriptionThe wooden standing Eleven-Faced Kannon is the principal image of Shakudoji Temple. Traditionally dated to the late Heian period, it is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Carved from a single piece of zelkova wood, the statue retains a trace of red on the lips, suggesting its former coloring. Its gentle posture, flowing robes, and serene expression are distinctive, and it is also worshiped locally as a Kannon associated with prayers for children.
