This wooden standing Eleven-Faced Kannon is preserved at Ganjoji Temple in Kannonji-cho, Tsu. Dating to the Heian period, it is designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Tsu City. Eleven-Faced Kannon is a form of Avalokiteshvara crowned with multiple faces, symbolizing compassion directed in all directions. The image has long been protected by the local community as a hidden Buddhist statue. It is normally not on public view, but current unveiling calendars list an annual opening on July 18. Visitors should confirm the date with the temple before traveling.
