DescriptionThis wooden standing Eleven-Faced Kannon is traditionally regarded as the principal image of Fumonji Temple. At about 291 cm in overall height, it is one of five major Buddhist statues preserved at the temple. Four of the five, excluding the seated Shaka, are thought to date to the late Heian period; this Kannon is notable for its gentle expression and tall, graceful stance. The group is designated a Tangible Cultural Property by Tsu City. Usually not on public view, the temple treasures are opened annually around the spring cherry-blossom festival.
