DescriptionA pair of wooden standing Kongo Rikishi guardians is enshrined in the Nio Gate (South Gate) of Funanji Temple. Dating to the Nanbokucho period, both figures are made of joined hinoki cypress with crystal eyes and painted decoration, and each stands 2.12 m tall. The open-mouthed Agyo figure on the left holds a vajra, while the closed-mouthed Ungyo figure on the right holds a staff. Their powerful musculature and realistic drapery are distinctive. The pair is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan and guards the temple precinct from the gate.
