DescriptionThis wooden standing Eleven-Faced Kannon Bodhisattva, viewable in Mirokuji Temple’s Main Hall, dates to the late Heian period (Fujiwara period). The statue is 174.6 cm high. Its full face displays the distinctive style of late-Heian sculpture, and eleven small heads crown the main head. The left hand holds a vase with a lotus, a later replacement, while the lowered right hand forms the abhaya mudra. The entire statue is thought to have originally been painted. Designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan, it can be viewed year-round.
