DescriptionDaihōon-ji, affectionately known as Senbon Shakadō, is a historic temple in Kamigyō. Its National Treasure main hall, the oldest surviving National Treasure building in central Kyoto, enshrines a seated Shaka Nyorai (Shakyamuni Buddha) carved by Gyōkai. The treasure hall also preserves Gyōkei’s statues of the Ten Great Disciples and Jōkei’s Six Kannon images, offering a close encounter with the artistry of Kamakura-period Buddhist sculpture and centuries of devotion.
