Description

The Murakuni no Sato Historical Museum at Ongakuji Temple displays 16 statues carved by Enku: a Yakushi triad, 11 of the Twelve Heavenly Generals, a Kojin deity, and a Great Dharma-Protecting Deity. The group is associated with Enku's mature period around 1676, when he was about 45. Vigorous adze cuts give the figures exceptional force while many retain Enku's characteristic warmth. The stern Kojin is especially distinctive and was exhibited in Berlin in 1971. The museum opens on designated festival weekends and can also be visited at other times by advance arrangement.
