Description

The principal images of Jissoji Temple’s Shaka Hall are a wooden Shaka triad dating to 1362 in the Nanboku-cho period. Shaka Tathagata is flanked by Monju Bodhisattva and Fugen Bodhisattva. Documents found inside the statues confirm that they were commissioned through the vows of Kira Mitsusada, Jissoji’s fifth abbot Taizan Ichigen, and other devotees. Stylistic and technical features suggest work by sculptors of the In school or closely related craftsmen. The triad is designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Aichi Prefecture and is shown to the public each year on the second Sunday of April during the O-Shaka-san festival.
