Description

The principal image of Eikokuji Temple is a jo-roku-scale wooden seated Amida Tathagata. Traditionally attributed to the Kamakura-period Buddhist sculptor Kasuga, it is designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Aichi Prefecture. Revered as the “Hifuse Fushigi no Mida,” or miraculous fire-protecting Amida, it is counted among the Three Great Buddhas of Nagoya. In 1665, Owari lord Tokugawa Mitsutomo had the image moved from Yakushiji Temple in Niwa District to Eikokuji. The temple's Japanese Christian Museum officially lists the statue among its displays, allowing visitors to worship it during museum opening hours.
