DescriptionThe principal image of Senchoji Temple’s Main Hall is a wooden seated Amida Tathagata from the Kamakura period. Tradition holds that it was originally made as the principal image of Daitsuji Temple in Kyoto, founded by Honkakuni, the wife of the third Kamakura shogun Minamoto no Sanetomo, to pray for his repose. It later passed through Seiganji Temple, the head temple of the Seizan Fukakusa branch of Jodo Buddhism, before being transferred to Senchoji in 1884. The statue is noted for its masculine features and powerful physique and is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Advance reservation is required for viewing.
