Description

The principal image of Kiyomizudera Temple in Kajita, Tomika is a rare seated Eleven-Faced Kannon Bosatsu designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Carved from a single piece of hinoki cypress with carved eyes, it dates to the Fujiwara phase of the Heian period. The statue is distinguished by a slender torso, broad stable knees, softly flowing drapery and a refined, gentle face. It was originally gilded, but centuries of incense smoke have darkened the surface, giving it a deeply mysterious presence. The image is normally closed to the public, but Tomika Town officially states that it is unveiled every year on September 9 from 10:00 to 11:00, providing a clearly defined opportunity to see the original statue.
