DescriptionA pair of wooden Kongo Rikishi guardian statues stands at the gate of Ganjoji Temple in Gifu City. Designated Important Cultural Properties of Gifu Prefecture, they are hinoki-cypress joined-wood sculptures with carved eyes and are thought to date from the late Kamakura period. Both Agyo and Ungyo display strongly modeled musculature, fierce expressions and a vivid sense of force. Although the temple preserves several other important Buddhist images, this entry focuses on the Nio statues because visitors can reliably see the actual works at the temple gate during ordinary visits. The temple is open 9:00–17:00, with free admission and no regular closing days.
