DescriptionThe principal image of Mino Kokubunji Temple is a wooden seated Yakushi Nyorai enshrined in the main hall. Measuring about 304.8 cm high, it is a monumental single-block wooden sculpture designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Temple tradition attributes the carving to Gyoki in the Nara period from a great zelkova tree, while the temple’s official description dates it stylistically to the late Heian period, around the 11th century. The figure has a massive, stable seated form, with the right hand forming the gesture of reassurance and the left holding a medicine jar. Its half-closed eyes, broad nose, full lips and compassionate expression are distinctive. Visitors can still worship the principal image in the main hall today.
