DescriptionThe principal image of Naka Kannondo Hall in Hashima, regarded locally as Enku’s birthplace, is a standing Eleven-Faced Kannon. According to the Hashima Folk History Museum, the 222 cm statue is thought to have been carved by Enku around 1669. Seventeen Enku statues, including this image, are enshrined in the hall and are designated Important Cultural Properties of Gifu Prefecture. Many of the figures believed to have been carved around the same time as the Eleven-Faced Kannon use high-quality cypress and show the smooth surface treatment characteristic of Enku’s early work. The hall is normally open from 9:00 to 17:00 and closed on Mondays, allowing visitors to view the Enku statues at close range.
