DescriptionJinguji Temple’s Niomon (North Gate) enshrines a pair of wooden standing Kongo Rikishi statues. The Agyo and Ungyo guardians stand powerfully on either side of the gate, and an ink inscription on the statues is dated 1385. The pair is designated a cultural property of Obama City, while the Niomon itself dates to the late Kamakura period and is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. Jinguji preserves a history of syncretic Shinto-Buddhist worship and is known for the Omizu-okuri rite held every March 2. Regular viewing is available from 9:00 to 16:00, but the temple is closed to visitors from February 15 through March 5.
