DescriptionJozenji Temple preserves a wooden seated Fudo Myoo dating to the Heian period and designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Its imposing wrathful form is revered under the name “Namikiri Fudo,” the Fudo who cuts through perilous waves, and has long been worshipped by fishermen of Wakasa Oshima for protection at sea. The image remains available for viewing, but Fukui Prefecture’s official tourism information lists both hours and closing days as requiring inquiry, so visitors should confirm in advance. The viewing fee is 500 yen.
