DescriptionThe principal image of Tamagawa Cave Kannon is an Eleven-Faced Kannon. Tradition says the sanctuary began when a Kannon image caught in a fisherman’s net was enshrined here; the image is said to be in a Chinese Tang style and is traditionally attributed to the monk Taicho. It was once enshrined in a natural seaside cave, but after a rock-collapse accident in 1989 it was moved for safety to the present artificial cave in 1994. Revered by fishermen along the Echizen Coast as a guardian of safety at sea, it is now freely accessible for worship. Echizen-yaki lights inside the cave are illuminated from 8:00 to 22:00.
