DescriptionWakasa Kokubunji preserves a wooden seated Yakushi Nyorai dating from the late Heian to early Kamakura period. The 79.7 cm joined-block statue is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It is a standard Yakushi form, with the right hand in the abhaya mudra and the left in the varada mudra supporting a medicine jar. An inscription inside the knee area shows that by 1693 it was enshrined as the principal image of a nunnery hermitage. Viewing is normally available from 9:00 to 17:00, with advance confirmation recommended; reservations are required from December through February.
