DescriptionEnshoji Temple’s principal image, a wooden seated Dainichi Nyorai, is enshrined in the Dainichido Hall. Dating to the early 12th century in the late Heian period, the 251.5 cm statue is made of cypress in joined-block construction and is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It is the Womb Realm Dainichi Nyorai, forming the hokkai-jo-in meditation mudra before the abdomen. Its broad knees and gently downcast expression give the large figure a calm, stable presence. Regular viewing is available from 9:00 to 18:00, and until 17:00 from November through April.
