DescriptionOn the grounds of Essoji Temple stands a Great Buddha consisting only of a head about three meters high. The temple priest at the time, who had served in the Pacific War, began collecting alms in 1943 to create the Buddha as a memorial for fallen comrades and many other victims. The head was completed in 1955, but the priest died before fulfilling the full plan, leaving it in its present form. Visitors can worship the face at close range, and local people affectionately call it the “Head Buddha.”
