DescriptionThe monumental head of the Hanibe Shakyamuni Great Buddha greets visitors at the entrance to Hanibe Gankutsuin. It is part of an ambitious Great Buddha project led by the second head priest and sculptor Tsugata Hakuma, with the head and shoulders currently completed. Gankutsuin opened in 1951 after Buddhist images were installed in former stone-quarry caves, where numerous figures including Amida Nyorai and Fudo Myoo are displayed. Visitors can see both the giant Buddha head and the cave sculptures during regular opening hours.
