Description

A wooden standing Amida Nyorai enshrined in the Treasure Hall of Jofukuji Temple. About 78 cm high, it is made of cypress in joined-block construction and dates to the early Kamakura period. Crystal is set into the eyes, and delicate kirikane patterns remain on the drapery. Traditionally attributed to Tankei, son of Unkei, the image is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It was originally the principal image of Kuonji Temple, was moved to Chugu Shrine to escape wartime destruction, and later came to Jofukuji. Normally kept in the Treasure Hall, it can be worshipped during its annual unveiling from August 1 to 3.
