DescriptionA wooden standing Sho Kannon Bosatsu preserved at Kichijoji Temple as its pilgrimage image. The 100 cm statue is primarily carved from a single block of cedar, with both hands attached separately. Its full round face, slender eyebrows and eyes, and settled stance retain stylistic features of the Fujiwara period, and it is regarded as the oldest surviving Buddhist image in Kurobe City. Tradition also says that it protected the Maeda forces during conflicts with the Uesugi and later became a guardian Bodhisattva of the Maeda lords of Kaga. Designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Kurobe City, it is normally kept as a secret Buddha and unveiled once every 33 years, with an interim unveiling sometimes held in the 17th year.
