DescriptionA gilt-bronze standing Thousand-Armed Kannon Bosatsu preserved as the principal image in the Kannon Hall of Ogawayama Senkoji Temple. It was made using a sectional casting technique characteristic of the Kamakura period, and the damaged halo retains delicate openwork arabesque patterns. Gold and silver plating was applied to the surface, while traces of red pigment still remain on the lips. Designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Toyama Prefecture, the image is normally kept as a secret Buddha. In addition to a full unveiling every 33 years, an interim unveiling is held in the 17th year, and a traditional lion dance connected with carrying the principal image to the Kannon Hall is still performed during the unveiling.
