DescriptionA gilt-bronze standing Kannon Bosatsu enshrined as the principal image in the Kannon Hall of Senkoji Temple. Cast in bronze and originally gilded, the image has now lost most of its gold surface. Its broad shoulders, slender body, and youthful face with small eyes, nose, and mouth suggest a date in the Hakuho period. It is designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Toyama Prefecture. Temple tradition says that in 1585 Hashiba Hideyoshi, entering Ecchu during his campaign, sensed the image's spiritual power and placed it under special protection. Normally kept as a secret Buddha, it can be viewed only during an unveiling held once every 33 years and is one of Toyama's especially ancient gilt-bronze Buddhist images.
