DescriptionA wooden standing Eleven-Faced Kannon Bosatsu enshrined as the principal image in the Main Hall of Rengeji Temple. It is a joined-block kaya-wood danzo, made to display the natural wood without original polychrome decoration. While retaining features of late-Heian sculpture, the realistic Song-influenced treatment of the robes suggests a date around the mid-Kamakura period. The image holds a staff in the right hand in the style of the Hasedera Kannon. Temple tradition says that the monk Kangyo brought it here as a guardian image associated with Minamoto no Yoritomo. Designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Toyama Prefecture, it is normally kept hidden and can be viewed only during an unveiling held once every 33 years.
