DescriptionThree wooden Kannon images preserved as the principal images of Jusonji Temple: standing Thousand-Armed Kannon Bosatsu, Sho Kannon Bosatsu and Bato Kannon Bosatsu. All three are carved from single blocks of cedar and are dated to the Kamakura period in Toyama Prefecture's cultural heritage materials. The central Thousand-Armed Kannon Bosatsu is 85.7 cm high and represents its thousand arms with 24 arms, unusually raising two above the head. The Sho Kannon Bosatsu measures 73.2 cm and the Bato Kannon Bosatsu 73.4 cm, and all three display distinctive regional carving. Tradition says they were once protected by the lord of Funami Castle. Designated Tangible Cultural Properties of Toyama Prefecture, the three images are normally hidden and can be viewed during an unveiling held every seven years.
