Description

A wooden seated Fudo Myoo enshrined as the principal image of Toyakuji Temple. The 81.8 cm figure is carved from a single block of cedar and is regarded as an early Kamakura-period work. Its disheveled hair, fierce expression with one eye narrowed, and protruding fangs create a powerful form, accompanied on either side by Kongara and Seitaka attendants. A classic representation of Fudo Myoo, it is designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Toyama Prefecture. Toyakuji remains active as Makino Fudoson, and the temple's official website identifies the image as a prefectural cultural property.
