DescriptionMore than 500 stone rakan figures line the grounds and rear hillside of Chokeiji Temple on Mount Kureha. They are said to have been commissioned in the late Edo period by the wealthy Toyama merchant Kuromakiya Zenjiro, carved over many years by stoneworkers on Sado Island, and transported by Kitamaebune ships. Each figure has a different expression and gesture, and visitors can walk among the group at close range, including representations of Shaka's Ten Great Disciples and the Sixteen Rakan. Designated a Historic Site by Toyama City, the group remains freely accessible for worship and is one of Toyama's most distinctive rakan sites.
