Description

A wooden seated Monju Bosatsu enshrined in the Yakushido Hall of Kokubunji Temple. The 58.5 cm figure is made in joined-block construction from cypress, holding a scroll in the left hand and a sword in the right, with crystal eyes. Its Song-influenced form, firm drapery carving, and relatively flat facial features suggest a date from the late Kamakura to the early Nanbokucho period. It is said to have originally been worshipped as a sacred image of nearby Keta Shrine and to have been moved to Kokubunji after the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the Meiji period. The statue is designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Toyama Prefecture. Takaoka's official tourism site lists Kokubunji as open year-round with free admission and introduces the Monju image in the Yakushido Hall as one of the temple's notable treasures.
