DescriptionA wooden standing Amida Nyorai enshrined as the principal image of Jozenji Temple. The 85 cm statue is made in joined-block construction from cypress and dates to the Kamakura period. Unlike most Amida images, its mouth is open to reveal its teeth, giving rise to the name Habuki no Amida. The teeth are made of pearls, the hair uses silver wire, and the drapery is rendered realistically; fine patterns were once painted in gold powder. Temple tradition attributes the image to the Chinese master Eicho. It is designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Toyama Prefecture and remains the principal image of Jozenji as an unusually rare form of Amida.
