Description

A wooden standing Amida Nyorai enshrined as the principal image of Raigoji Temple. Measuring 78.5 cm high, it is made in joined-block construction from cypress and is considered an early Kamakura-period work. The rounded face has a high nose and firm mouth; crystal is set in the eyes and urna, while agate is fitted at the front of the head. Its calm bodily form and finely rendered drapery are also distinctive. Temple tradition attributes the image to Prince Shotoku. It is designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Toyama Prefecture. The official Jodo Shu temple directory lists Raigoji as open for worship and able to receive group visitors, so the principal Amida Nyorai remains accessible for worship today.
