Description

A reinforced-concrete seated Amida Nyorai standing in the grounds of Koshoji Temple. Its formal name is Juman Nokotsu Daibutsu. The project was initiated in 1928, construction began in spring 1930, and Tonami City's official information gives its completion as summer 1933. It was created by Takeuchi Genzo, a master plasterer and kote-e artisan. The statue measures 10.2 m from the lotus pedestal to the top of the head, with the figure itself measuring 6.3 m, and is traditionally said to contain the remains of 100,000 devotees as a memorial Buddha. Together with the Takaoka and Kosugi Great Buddhas, it is one of the Toyama Three Great Buddhas and can still be worshipped at close range in the temple grounds.
