DescriptionA wooden standing Sho Kannon Bosatsu enshrined as the principal image of Shogenji Temple. Carved from a single block of cypress, the image has a youthful face with a faint smile, an ornate openwork metal ornament above the head, and comparatively simple robes. Temple tradition attributes it to Gyoki, while cultural-property research dates it to the early Kamakura period. It is said to have become the principal image when Shogenji was founded in 1574 with prayers for protection from flooding of the Joganji River. The statue is designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Toyama Prefecture and remains an object of worship at the thirty-first temple of the Hokuriku Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage.
