Description

A wooden standing Ususama Myoo enshrined in the Hannya Room on the right side of Zuiryuji Temple's Hatto Hall. The 141 cm figure is made of cypress in separately carved sections assembled together and is regarded as a Kamakura-period work. It stands on one leg with a small boar-headed figure at its feet, holds a spear in the right hand, and displays flames on its crown and halo. Traces of its former brilliant coloring remain on the robes, and the image is designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Toyama Prefecture. It was originally the guardian deity of the temple toilet, but after that building was destroyed by fire about 250 years ago, it was moved to its present location. Today it remains popular as the 'god of the toilet' believed to purify defilement and can be viewed closely during regular temple visits.
