DescriptionThe wooden standing Mikaeri Amida Nyorai is enshrined in the Main Hall of Angoji Temple. Measuring 75.2 cm high, it is a joined-block cypress sculpture from the Muromachi period. Rather than facing straight ahead, the figure turns its face diagonally down to the left as though looking back to guide people, while both hands form the raigo mudra. The body, robes, and legs remain largely still, making the subtle backward glance stand out within an otherwise quiet stance. Only a few Mikaeri Amida images dating from the Muromachi period or earlier are known nationwide, and this image is designated a Cultural Property of Toyama Prefecture.
