DescriptionA wooden standing Eleven-Faced Kannon Bosatsu enshrined in the Kannon Hall of Jorakuji Temple. Carved from a single piece of cedar and measuring 185 cm in height, it is believed to date from the early Heian period. It appears originally to have been gilded, but the coloring has worn away and the cedar grain is now visible. It was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1926. Preserved at this ancient temple traditionally founded in 702, the image is normally hidden from view and can be seen together with the Sho Kannon Bosatsu once a year during an unveiling in mid-April.
