DescriptionTwo wooden standing Kongo Rikishi are enshrined in the Nio Gate of Daifukuji Temple. Agyo measures 264.5 cm and Ungyo 263.1 cm, both monumental figures over 2.6 meters high, made from joined coniferous wood with carved eyes. Their well-balanced heads and bodies achieve power and realism without excessive exaggeration, showing characteristics associated with Kei-school Buddhist sculptors. An entry in the temple record Daifukuji Shodo Zokenki, together with the statues' form and construction, suggests that they may date to 1307. Designated Shizuoka Prefectural Tangible Cultural Properties, the two guardians remain in the Nio Gate and are listed by the prefecture as viewable at any time.
