Description

A wooden standing Fudo Myoo is enshrined in Tatehoji Kannon Hall. Measuring 78.1 cm high and made from cypress using the split-and-hollowed single-block technique, its taut facial expression and well-balanced proportions indicate a work by a Kei-school sculptor from the latter half of the 13th century. It was transmitted from Tatehoji, once a major temple complex in the Hatori area of Shizuoka, and is now preserved in the local Kannon hall. Designated a Shizuoka Prefectural Tangible Cultural Property, it is regarded as one of the finest surviving Fudo Myoo images in the prefecture. The hall is normally closed, but the prefectural cultural-property information states that viewing is possible from 10:00 to 15:30 with advance contact.
